Pricing
Running your own mail is free, and stays free. The paid editions add what an organisation needs to delegate administration, and what a provider needs to sell mail to other people. Everything is priced per mailbox per year, in US dollars.
Community
- Unlimited mailboxes on one domain
- SMTP, IMAP, POP3, JMAP, CalDAV/CardDAV
- Webmail and admin console
- Spam filtering, antivirus, DNSBL, greylisting
- At-rest encryption, backups, restore, migration, GDPR export
Business
- Everything in Community
- Unlimited mail domains — Community hosts one
- Single sign-on — OpenID Connect, LDAP directories
- Delegated administration — tenant and domain admins, scoped by grant
Provider
- Everything in Business
- Multiple cells — routing, secondary MX, tenant moves between cells
- Commerce — plans, usage metering, bulk provisioning
Only user and group mailboxes are counted — aliases, mailing lists, plus-addresses and shared folders are free on every plan, and there is no mailbox limit on any plan including Community. Mail domains are the one thing Community limits: it hosts one, which is what an organisation running its own mail needs. Tenants are unlimited on the paid plans.
Rates
The rate falls as you grow, and each band is charged at its own rate — you are not moved wholesale onto a cheaper number.
| Mailboxes | USD per mailbox per year |
|---|---|
| 1 – 499 | $1.65 |
| 500 – 4,999 | $1.20 |
| 5,000 – 49,999 | $0.90 |
| 50,000 – 99,999 | $0.70 |
| 100,000 and beyond | get in touch |
499 × $1.65 plus 101 × $1.20 — $944.55 a year,
an effective $1.57 a mailbox. It is not 600 × $1.20.

How the licence works
Annual or monthly
Annual is the headline rate. Monthly is one tenth of the annual price each month, for organisations that would rather not commit for a year.
There is a minimum
Paid plans start at $180 a year, which covers you to about 110 mailboxes. Below that, Community is genuinely the right product — it is complete, it is free, and it has no mailbox limit. What it does not do is host a second mail domain.
Nothing is held hostage
If a subscription lapses, the server reverts to Community. Enterprise features switch off; mail keeps flowing and no data is lost. Your backups, your at-rest encryption and your export tools are Community features and always will be — a company should never have to pay us to get its own data out, or to keep it safe.
Growing mid-term
Existing mailboxes keep working if you pass your licensed count; the server stops creating new ones until the licence is raised. Buy more at any time and apply the new key to the running server — no restart, no downtime, and you are charged only for the remainder of the period.
Support
Every paid plan gets best-effort support by email, and the community channels are open to everyone including Community users. If you need a response-time commitment, ask — we would rather agree an SLA we can keep than advertise one we cannot.
Questions
Do I need a licence for each server?
No. A licence covers the deployment, however many servers it runs on.
Do domains or tenants cost extra?
Not per domain, no — the paid plans are unlimited and you are charged for mailboxes, not names. Community hosts one mail domain. A second one is the licensed tier, because a deployment carrying several mail domains is almost always running mail on behalf of other people. Aliases, plus-addresses, mailing lists and groups are not domains and never count.
We run our own mail for 3,000 staff on one domain. What do we pay?
Nothing, unless you want single sign-on or delegated administrators. Community has no mailbox limit and never will — capping seats would charge a charity and a company the same way for being large, which is not what we are trying to price.
What happens if we are already on Community with two domains?
Nothing changes. The limit applies to adding a domain: every domain already registered keeps working, keeps receiving, and keeps re-verifying its DNS. The server declines the next one and says why.
Can we try it?
Yes — download it and run it. It is the complete platform with no licence file at all. Ask us for a time-limited key when you want to evaluate the paid features.
Ready to start? Install ZephyrAB and run it free for as long as you like. When you need the paid features, get in touch and we will issue a key.
